The difference between 12mm and 19mm plywood is mainly about strength, load capacity, and durability — not just thickness. Picking the wrong one for the wrong part of a piece of furniture is one of the most common (and most expensive) mistakes homeowners make when working with a carpenter, so it's worth understanding exactly where each one belongs before you order material.
The difference isn't marginal. A shelf that's fine at 12mm for paperbacks will visibly sag over time if you load it with heavy hardcovers or storage boxes — the board simply wasn't specified for that load.

This is exactly why professionals default to 19mm for structural joints — a hinge screwed into 12mm board is far more likely to work loose and eventually strip the hole, while the same hinge in 19mm board has much more material to actually grip.
The price difference is real, and it's tempting to use 12mm wherever possible to save on a project. But using 12mm in a role meant for 19mm — a wardrobe frame, a cabinet carcass — tends to show up later as sagging shelves, loosening joints, or panels that need to be rebuilt within a few years. The upfront saving on cheaper board is often smaller than the cost of redoing the carpentry once it fails.
This connects directly back to load capacity — a thinner board flexes more under the same weight, and repeated flexing over months and years is exactly what leads to visible warping.

Use 19mm wherever a component is load-bearing or structural, and 12mm wherever it just needs to hold shape under light to moderate weight. Getting this mix right the first time is far cheaper than fixing a sagging wardrobe or a loosened cabinet hinge two years in.
