Monsoon is the one season that reveals whether plywood was actually built to a genuine water-resistant standard, or just marketed as one. Here's what determines that outcome — and how to check it before the rain does.
Many local suppliers use a red-dyed veneer core as a visual signal of quality, often pairing it with claims like "premium red core material." This is a colouring technique applied during manufacturing — it has no connection to the plywood's actual water resistance.
Plywood is built by bonding thin veneer layers with adhesive. When that adhesive isn't rated for sustained moisture exposure, the bond weakens as humidity and water penetrate the layers. This shows up as:
These issues typically appear a few months after installation — not immediately — because it takes sustained monsoon-level moisture, not everyday humidity, to expose a weak bond.
A significant share of plywood sold in the local market as "premium" or "waterproof" is actually MR-grade board carrying an unauthorized BWP stamp. In dry conditions, MR and BWP grade plywood can look identical. The difference only becomes visible once the board is exposed to real, sustained moisture — which is precisely what a monsoon provides.
Under the IS:710 standard, genuine BWP-grade plywood must pass a 72-hour continuous boiling water test. This is a far more severe condition than anything a monsoon season produces, which is why correctly certified BWP board doesn't show monsoon-related damage.

A supplier's plywood holding up through the first few dry months after installation isn't proof that it's genuinely BWP-grade — sustained monsoon-level moisture is a meaningfully different test than everyday indoor humidity. The only reliable indicator is an independent test of a sample piece.
