“Marine plywood” and “BWP plywood” often appear side by side in a plywood store. That makes them sound like two separate choices. They are not quite the same kind of label.
Marine plywood refers to plywood made to the IS 710 marine plywood standard. BWP, or Boiling Water Proof, describes a grade associated with water-resistant bonding. IS 710 marine plywood is BWP, but you should not assume that every sheet advertised as “BWP” is IS 710 marine plywood.
The way to choose is to check the Indian Standard and grade on the actual sheet, then match them to where the furniture will be installed. BIS identifies IS 710 as the marine plywood standard and IS 303 as the standard for general-purpose plywood. Bureau of Indian Standards
Marine Plywood vs BWP Plywood: Quick Comparison
| What to check | Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood | Plywood sold as “BWP” |
|---|---|---|
| What the name tells you | It claims the IS 710 marine plywood standard and BWP grade | It claims a grade; the applicable standard still needs checking |
| Standard to look for | IS 710 | Check the sheet; it may be IS 710 or another applicable standard, such as IS 303 |
| Where FlaerPly recommends it | Kitchens, bathrooms, damp walls and homes with higher moisture or construction-related risks | Choose by its verified standard and application, not the word “BWP” alone |
| What to verify | ISI marking, CM/L number, product details and invoice | The same details, especially the Indian Standard |
IS 303 covers general-purpose plywood and includes BWP among its grades. That is why the words “BWP plywood” alone do not settle whether a sheet is IS 710 marine plywood or IS 303 BWP plywood. Bureau of Indian Standards
What Is Marine Grade IS 710 BWP Plywood?
IS 710 is the Indian Standard for marine plywood, intended for demanding moisture conditions. Marine plywood is also useful well beyond boats: in a home, moisture may reach kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and furniture fixed against damp walls. Bureau of Indian Standards
FlaerPly’s default recommendation for Indian homes is FlaerPly Smart 710, whose product specifications list it as IS 710 BWP plywood. For homes where construction conditions or termite exposure call for a more cautious product selection, FlaerPly recommends considering marine-grade options such as FlaerPly Victor and FlaerPly Platinum. flaerply.com
What Does BWP Mean?
BWP means Boiling Water Proof. It tells you something about the plywood grade, but it should not be your only buying check.
Two products advertised as BWP may carry different Indian Standards and product specifications. Ask the seller to show you the standard and grade printed on the sheet. Then check the certification details rather than relying on a shop label or verbal description.
Where Does FlaerPly Recommend Each Grade?
| Home application | FlaerPly recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen cabinets, including overhead cabinets | Marine Grade IS 710 BWP | Steam, spills and possible leaks |
| Bathroom vanity or storage | Marine Grade IS 710 BWP | Humidity and water exposure |
| Wardrobe or TV unit against a damp wall, or a wall adjoining a kitchen, bathroom or balcony | Marine Grade IS 710 BWP | Moisture can affect the wall from the other side |
| Heavy storage or bed in a dry area | IS 303 BWP | The recommended grade for these dry-area uses |
| Wardrobe against a dry interior wall | IS 303 BWP | Storage use without known damp-wall exposure |
| Suitable freestanding shoe rack or TV unit that does not touch a wall | BWR may be considered | Limited dry-area use |
For homes built under conditions that may increase termite or moisture concerns, FlaerPly recommends Marine Grade IS 710 BWP throughout. Check the building for existing seepage or termite activity as well; selecting plywood does not resolve an existing building problem.
Is Marine Plywood Completely Waterproof?
The grade is intended for demanding moisture conditions, but a finished cabinet still needs careful installation. Water can collect at joints, plumbing cut-outs and unsealed edges. Leaks and damp walls should be repaired rather than left to the plywood to withstand indefinitely.
Think about both the sheet and the furniture built from it: select the appropriate grade, seal its cut edges and install it away from standing water where possible.
How Can You Check What You Are Buying?
Before approving a plywood sheet, check:
The ISI mark, where applicable
The printed Indian Standard, especially IS 710 if marine plywood is being claimed
The grade and thickness
The manufacturer and product name
The CM/L licence number against BIS records
The invoice, product specifications and warranty terms
A CM/L lookup helps you check the licence details. You can also request a cut sample and use the FlaerPly Pressure Test guide to compare whether plywood layers remain bonded after exposure to heat and water. The pressure test is a practical comparison; it does not certify the sheet as IS 710 or IS 303. flaerply.com
Conclusion
The useful question is not simply “marine or BWP?” It is “which Indian Standard and grade does this sheet meet, and where will I use it?”
For kitchens, bathrooms, damp adjoining walls and higher-risk home conditions, FlaerPly recommends Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood. FlaerPly Smart 710 is its default recommendation for Indian homes, with Victor and Platinum available as other IS 710 marine-grade options. For heavy furniture and storage in dry areas, FlaerPly recommends IS 303 BWP plywood.
Check the sheet’s certification details, then ask for a cut sample. The FlaerPly Pressure Test lets you compare visible bonding performance using a pressure cooker. FlaerPly shares its demonstrations on YouTube and Instagram.
Frequently Asked Questions
They are overlapping terms. IS 710 marine plywood is BWP, but a sheet labelled only “BWP” should not be assumed to meet IS 710. Check its printed standard and certification details.
FlaerPly recommends Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood for kitchen cabinets, including overhead cabinets. Do not choose a sheet for the kitchen based only on a general “BWP” label.
Yes. It is FlaerPly’s recommendation for wardrobes against damp walls or walls adjoining kitchens, bathrooms or balconies. For a wardrobe against a dry interior wall, FlaerPly recommends IS 303 BWP plywood.
It is made for demanding moisture exposure, but furniture still needs sealed edges, sound plumbing and proper installation.
Look for the IS 710 marking and product details on the actual sheet. Check its CM/L number through official BIS facilities and compare the result with the sheet and invoice.
Ask for an actual cut sample and follow the FlaerPly Pressure Test guide. Comparable samples are heated while submerged in water in a pressure cooker. After the cooker has fully depressurised and the pieces have cooled, check for layers opening or separating. This helps you compare bonding; it does not replace certification checks. flaerply.com
