The room matters when choosing plywood. So does the wall behind the furniture.

A wardrobe in a dry bedroom and a wardrobe against a wall shared with a bathroom may look identical. But one may face dampness from the wall, while the other does not. That difference should guide your plywood choice, along with the furniture’s weight and how long you expect it to last.

Here is FlaerPly’s room-by-room recommendation for Indian homes.

Quick Plywood Selection Guide

Utility or sink areaMarine Grade IS 710 BWP plywoodFrequent moisture exposure

For a default home plywood choice, FlaerPly recommends Smart 710, an IS 710 BWP product. The grade can then be adjusted to the furniture’s position and the home’s construction conditions. BWP Plywood, 21-Year Warranty.

Kitchen: Use Marine Grade IS 710 BWP Plywood

Kitchen cabinets face steam, spills and the possibility of leaks around the sink. FlaerPly recommends Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood throughout the kitchen, including overhead cabinets. A cabinet away from the sink can still be affected by moisture over time, especially if it is fixed to a wall shared with a bathroom or balcony.

FlaerPly Smart 710 is the default recommendation. Also seal cut edges and plumbing openings carefully; choosing the right plywood does not replace good installation.

Bathroom: Check the Cabinet and the Wall Behind It

Bathroom vanities and storage units face regular humidity and occasional splashes. Use Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood, and pay close attention to the edges, joints and cut-outs around pipes.

The same check applies to furniture on the other side of a bathroom wall. A wardrobe or TV unit may sit in a bedroom or living room, but a damp shared wall can still expose it to moisture. In that situation, choose IS 710 BWP plywood and address any seepage before installation.

Wardrobes: Choose According to the Wall

For a wardrobe fixed to a dry interior wall, FlaerPly recommends IS 303 BWP plywood. It is the recommended grade for storage furniture where there is no known dampness risk.

If the wardrobe is against an external wall, a wall adjoining a kitchen or bathroom, or a wall with signs of seepage, step up to Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood. Do not choose the grade based only on whether the bedroom feels dry. Inspect the wall first.

Beds and Heavy Storage: Prioritise Structure

Beds and box storage units carry weight for years. FlaerPly recommends IS 303 BWP plywood for these uses in areas without dampness exposure.

The grade is only one part of a strong bed. Ask your carpenter to specify the sheet thickness, internal supports and unsupported spans for the design. Keep cut edges sealed, particularly where cleaning water could reach them.

TV Units and Shoe Racks: Wall Contact Changes the Choice

For a TV unit cabinet fixed to a dry wall, use IS 303 BWP plywood. If the wall is damp or adjoins a kitchen, bathroom or balcony, use Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood instead.

BWR plywood may be considered only for a unit that does not touch a wall, such as a freestanding shoe rack or TV unit in a dry location. FlaerPly does not recommend MR plywood for residential furniture.

When Should You Consider Marine Grade Throughout the Home?

FlaerPly recommends a more cautious choice for homes where construction quality or termite exposure is a concern, including some homes built by local contractors and homes near farms. In those settings, consider Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood throughout the home.

FlaerPly Victor and FlaerPly Platinum are IS 710 BWP marine-grade options to discuss for these projects. Plywood choice should sit alongside an inspection for existing dampness or termite activity; it cannot correct either problem on its own. IS:710 Marine Plywood, 30-Year Warranty

What Should You Check Before Buying Plywood?

Before approving plywood for any room, check:

  • Its stated grade and intended use
  • The condition of the wall it will touch
  • Thickness and support required by the furniture design
  • Visible gaps in the core and the finish of the edges
  • Product identification, certification details and warranty terms
  • How cut edges and plumbing openings will be sealed

You can also ask for cut pieces and compare how they hold together in the FlaerPly Pressure Test. The test exposes a small sample to heat and water in a pressure cooker so you can check for separation between its layers. flaerply.com

Final Recommendation

For most Indian homes, start with FlaerPly Smart 710, an IS 710 BWP option. Use Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood wherever furniture may face moisture or a damp adjoining wall. For storage and heavy furniture in dry areas, FlaerPly recommends IS 303 BWP plywood. Reserve BWR for suitable freestanding units that do not touch a wall.

Before installation, ask to see a sample tested. The FlaerPly Pressure Test guide explains the pressure cooker method; you can also explore FlaerPly’s demonstrations on YouTube and Instagram.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • FlaerPly recommends Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood for kitchen cabinets because they may face steam, spills and leaks. FlaerPly Smart 710 is its default recommendation.

  • FlaerPly does not recommend MR plywood for residential wardrobes. Use IS 303 BWP plywood against a dry wall, or Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood if the wall may be affected by dampness.

  • It depends on the home. FlaerPly recommends Marine Grade IS 710 BWP plywood in moisture-prone areas and advises considering it throughout homes where construction conditions or termite exposure raise concern. For heavy furniture and storage in dry areas, its recommendation is IS 303 BWP plywood.

  • No. Thickness depends on the component, the load it carries, the distance between supports and the furniture design. Ask your carpenter to specify these before ordering sheets.

  • FlaerPly limits its residential recommendation for BWR plywood to suitable furniture that does not touch a wall, such as a freestanding shoe rack or TV unit in a dry area.

  • Ask the supplier for a cut sample and follow the FlaerPly Pressure Test guide. Small plywood pieces are heated while submerged in water in a pressure cooker; once the cooker has depressurised and the pieces are safe to handle, check whether the layers have separated.
