Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently amended the IS 303:1989 and IS 710:2010 standards by releasing IS 303:2024 and IS 710:2024. As per these standards, only IS 710 can now be considered as Marine Grade ply.
1.IS 303 is MR (Moisture Resistant) grade plywood. It's suitable for interior use where there's no direct water exposure — This is more affordable and widely used for commercial work for shops, offices or use & throw movie sets, where dampness or moisture risk is extremely low and the usage life is also low.
2. IS 303 is BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) is far more resistant to water, humidity, but cannot withstand continuous exposure to moisture or humidity. It's used against dry walls largely and in case of budget interiors, this is used in rooms like living and study room or rooms that do not share walls with wet areas.
3. IS 710 is Marine Grade and BWP plywood. This is the grade of plywood that is most suitable for Indian Homes across all climates. This understanding is super critical as most Indian building construction develops cracks, dampness and leakages within 1 month of regular usage and the furniture has to fight continuous dampness and humid conditions before maintenance of the problematic walls are done.
IS 710 is the higher-spec, more durable option — but "better" really depends on your use case:
For dry interior furniture (bedrooms, living rooms): IS 303 is perfectly adequate and more cost-effective.
For kitchens, bathrooms, high-humidity areas, or exterior use: IS 710 is clearly the better choice and worth the extra cost.
For structural or load-bearing applications in wet conditions: IS 710 (or BWP/Marine grade) is recommended.
IS 710 Marine Grade plywood is the most suitable for Indian's homes, more do due to quality of building construction in India. FlaerPly's Smart 710 is our flagship Marine Grade plywood that beats every other plywood in Pressure Test.
