The “best” plywood thickness for furniture isn’t a single number—it depends on what part of the furniture you’re making and how much load it will carry. But there is a clear industry standard you can follow.
18mm–19mm → BEST overall for furniture structure
12mm → good for shelves & partitions
6mm → for back panels & non-load parts
25mm → heavy-duty (beds, tabletops)
For most home furniture, 18mm plywood is the ideal choice.
Wardrobes, cabinets, TV units, study tables
Use: 18mm–19mm plywood
Reason: Strong, holds screws well, long-lasting
This is the industry standard thickness in India
Inside wardrobe shelves, kitchen shelves
Use: 12mm plywood
Reason: Good balance of strength + cost
Works well for moderate weight
Wardrobe back, cabinet backing
Use: 4mm–6mm plywood
Reason: No load-bearing needed, just covering
Bed frames, dining tables, countertops
Use: 19mm–25mm plywood
Reason: Handles high load & long spans
